Maria Celeng
Mária Celeng has begun her 2023/24 season singing Micaela from Bizet’s Carmen at the Gärtnerplatztheater. She is a member of the ensemble since 2017. In previous seasons she performed main soprano roles at the Gärtnerplatztheater such as Fiordiligi from Mozart’s Cosi fan tutte, Susanna from Le nozze di Figaro, Musetta and Mimi from Puccini’s La Boheme, Pamina and First Lady from Mozart’s Die Zauberlföte, Gretel from Humperdinck’s Hänsel und Gretel, Lucile Desmoulins from Von Einem’s Dantons Tod, Luise from Henze’s Der junge Lord and Baronin Freimann from Lortzing’s Wildschütz. She was Giulietta in the new production of Hoffmanns Erzählungen from Offenbach directed by Stefano Poda and conducted by Anthony Bramall, Ann Trulove from Stravinsky’s opera The Rake’s progress, directed by Adam Cooper, Donna Elvira from Mozart’s Don Giovanni, Tatyana from Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin, Anita from Krenek’s Jonny spielt auf and Luisa Miller from Verdi’s Luisa Miller.
Celeng made her debut at such important Opera Houses like La Scala in Milano, performing the role of Drusilla from Monteverdi’s L’incoronazione di Poppea conducted by Rinaldo Alessandrini. She was the member of the Young Singers Project at the prestigious Salzburg Festival as well as the Operastudio of the Bavarian State Opera House. She worked together with conductors such as Antonio Pappano (Don Carlos Salzburg Festival) and Franz Welser- Möst (Salzburg Festival).
In 2017 she made her Debut as Despina from Mozart’s Cosi fan tutte at Opera Paris under the baton of Philippe Jordan then one year later she sang also at Staatsoper Unter den Linden in Berlin the role of Amore and Valetto from Monteverdi’s L’incoronazione di Poppea under the baton of Diego Fasolis. The same year she appeared as Annina at the Royal Opera House Muscat from Strauss’s One night in Venice conducted by Daniele Rustioni.
At the beginning of her career she was also a passionate performer of the baroque repertoire, she performed at Chateau de Versailles the role of Araspe from J. Adolf Hasse’s Didone abbandonata conducted by Michael Hofstetter. This production was recorded on CD by the Naxos Records. She was invited by Rolando Villazon to make her debut at he Mozart Festival in Salzburg in 2021 in the role of Celidora from Mozart’s L’oca del Cairo under the baton of Robin Ticciati. (was canceled due to the pandemic).
Already during her studies she was commited to concert and oratorio repertoire as well. She sang the first soprano -mostly at the famous hungarian Palace of Arts in Budapest - with acclaimed hungarian musicians such as Zoltàn Kocsis in Haydn’s Nelson mass, with Ádám Fischer in Haydn’s Creation or with Kovàcs János in Debussy’s Le Martyre de Saint Sébastien.
Mária Celeng is a permanent guest soloist at the Hungarian State Opera and in the season 2023/24 she will return as Musetta from Puccini’s La Bohème as well she returns to the Palace of the Arts (Müpa) as soprano soloist of Messa per Rossini, which will be performed first time in Hungary under the baton of Henrik Nánási.
Mária Celeng earned her Bachelor Arts of Degree at the highly acclaimed Franz Liszt Music Academy in Budapest and her Master of Music at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater and the August Everding Musiktheater in München.
She was a finalist and a prize winner at famous international competitions such as the Neue Stimmen, Cardiff Singer of the World or Francisco Vinas. In 2014 she received the prestigious prize of the Munich Opera Festival and the same year she was honored with the Prima Primissima Junior Prize in Budapest. Also in 2014 she was chosen the Singer of the year by the daily Abendzeitung newspaper in Munich.
